The Census of Agriculture for Outlying Areas conducted in the Virgin Islands is designed to obtain data on a totally exhaustive list of agricultural commodities. The census also collects expense, income, and agricultural practices data, operator characteristics such as race, gender, age, tenure on the farm, and operating arrangements.

The statistics collected in the census relate to places with agricultural operations qualifying as farms according to the census definition. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, this included all places from which $500 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the 12-month period between January 1 and December 31.
